Let me say it loud for the people in the back:
Everything in your home needs a home.
I know, it sounds simple. But really think about it.
When you walk into your space and toss things onto the counter, drop bags on the floor, or shove items in a closet “just for now,” what you’re actually doing is creating clutter.
What “Everything Needs a Home” Doesn't Mean
- Tossed on the table
- Plunked on a counter
- Stuffed in a drawer
- Shoved under the bed
- Hidden behind the door of the spare room
That’s not organizing. That’s hiding.
When something really has a home, it has a logical, accessible place that you return it to when you’re done using it. That’s how you keep your home tidy, calm, and clutter-free, without the constant stress of “Where did I put that!?”
A Few Easy Examples
Paperwork
Designate a simple inbox tray or file folder for any paperwork you need to deal with. Then, this is key: pick one day each week to go through it.
Have a filing system (drawer, box, or cabinet) for papers you need to keep, and use it consistently.
Kids’ Toys
Large bins, baskets, totes with lids, shelving, whatever works for your space and your kids’ stuff.
Teach them that part of playtime is clean-up time. At the end of the day, everything goes back to its home.
