Step One: Take It All Out
Let’s do this the bold way:
Empty your closet of every piece of clothing! Yes, all of it, and place it on your bed.
Take a moment. Look at that mountain of fabric. Admire it… maybe even laugh at it.
Then get ready to take back control.
Step Two: Sort It Out
- Dress pants
- Jeans
- Casual Tops
- Dressy tops
- Casual dresses
- Formal wear
- (Add any other categories that make sense for you)
Once you’ve sorted your piles, you’ll likely be shocked at how many of each item you own. It’s OK. You’re not alone.
Step Three: The Honest Closet Audit
-
Does it fit?
If it hasn’t fit in over a year… it goes to the floor pile. -
When did I last wear it?
If it’s been more than a year… floor pile. -
Is it faded, stained, has holes, or just looks sad?
Floor pile. -
Is it from the 70s, 80s, or 90s (and not in a cool vintage way)?
Floor pile. -
Is it just plain ugly?
You guess it... floor pile.
Step Four: Rehang What You Love (and Wear!)
- Donate to a local shelter or transition home
- Bring nicer pieces to a consignment shop
- Support programs like Dress for Success
- Toss anything that’s stained, damaged, or just done
Step Six: Breathe… and Enjoy Your Closet!
Look at that! You’ve just downsized and reorganized your closet. Doesn’t it feel lighter? Easier? Maybe even a little fun?
Now… is it time to go shopping?
Just kidding! (But seriously, only shop with intention now that you know what you really wear.)
Make This a Habit
If you do this once or twice a year, you’ll find it much easier to keep track of what’s in your closet and what you actually need.
You’ll free up space, reduce stress, and maybe even rediscover pieces you love but forgot you owned.
