Hobbies and collecting? So much fun.
Until suddenly… your house starts to look like a vintage shop with no cash register.
People collect all kinds of things, such as stamps, records, and books, and yes, I know that makes me sound like I’ve time-traveled here from 1978. But trust me, no matter what you collect, the principle is the same:
You need to think about how much space your collection is taking up, and why you’re holding onto it.
When Hobbies Start to Cross the Line
- Why did I start collecting this in the first place?
- Do I still enjoy it?
- Is it becoming a burden, physically, mentally, or emotionally?
An Example That Might Hit Home: VHS Tapes
I’ve worked with plenty of seniors who have huge collections of VHS movies, yet they haven’t owned a VCR in years.
When I ask why they’re keeping them, the answer is often:
“Well, I spent a lot of money on them, and I can always sell them.”
But here’s the thing:
If your collection’s value was financial, make sure you’re staying current on what it’s actually worth today. Many once-prized items are now obsolete. If your collection was about passion, awesome! Let’s make sure it’s not taking over your home—or your peace of mind.
Collections Need Boundaries (Just Like Everything Else)
- Dedicate one space in your home for your collection—whether it’s a shelf, a cabinet, or a display wall
- Avoid overflow; if your collection’s growing, consider letting go of items that no longer spark joy
- Rotate or refresh your display instead of keeping everything out at once
- Ask yourself: “Would anyone else want to inherit this?” (A tough one, but worth thinking about.)
Keep the Fun, Lose the Clutter
Collecting should bring enjoyment, not frustration. You can still treasure your hobby and create a living space that’s comfortable, clear, and under control.
And if you’re feeling stuck or unsure how to scale back without letting go of what you love, that’s what I’m here for.
Ready to regain control of your space, without giving up the things that matter?
